Raising Pit Bulldogs

Updated: Jul 17, 2019

Penny Blossom in her last days of pregnancy.

We are lucky to have Penny Blossom. We got her from our very good friends. She is extremely special, and comes with a long pedigree. This girl's mama and daddy are special dogs. Therefor her babies are a delicacy. Breeding these dogs can come with some difficulties, as we found out. I had a litter of puppies before, but my first Bulldog, Brownie who was a Red Nosed Pit, took care of her pups all by herself. This one was totally different.

Princess Penny. Look at that ear!

Penny is a year and a half old now, and she is spoiled rotten. She is not like most dogs of her kind. Many people are skeptical about having a bulldog, but after you read this blog, you may want to change your mind. We love our bulldogs. I will NEVER have another dog besides a bulldog. Bulldogs love attention and love. If you show them love and attention, they will love you in return.

Penny's first cake. She was like, "I love birthdays!, even though it is not mine!"

Penny is a sugar baby. She loves sugar. She will kiss you right in the face. We got her when she was 6 weeks old, and she was a terrorist, as all puppies are, not just bulldogs. With a little training, she has turned into a great dog. Besides when she gets hungry. Check out this video.

As you can see, she has some kind of manners. She did not go for it like you would think. She just begged. She is so smart, if she were Scooby Doo, and you said dog, she would look around like "Where?"

We bred Penny like she is supposed to be bred, to keep the bloodline tight in these dogs. Every one now wants one. If you know about dogs, these dogs are Jeep and Red Boy Jocko American Pit Bull Terriers. There were some complications with her delivery. She did great, it took around four hours. The first one born looked like a badger. The next one born was browner than the others who were born grey, and my husband said to start with that he was small, and he was right. He was small and something was wrong with him. We had no idea what we were in for.

There were six puppies. The last one was a still birth, but she looked healthy. So after researching, I think that maybe she died while Penny was giving birth. It left us with five puppies. The one that was born small would not latch on. We worked with him and worked with him until he finally took to it. However, he was weak and clearly he was not gaining weight. Panic mode struck us and we started Googling what to do. I found a video. For this lady and her video, I am thankful. I found "The Udder Mudder" as she called it and he took to it.

It just was not enough. We kept him close. We worked with him round the clock ensuring he was getting a little in his tummy for energy. Some people say to let nature do it's work, but I could never do that. I had to help this little one. He slept on my chest every night of his tiny life. He survived for I think it was 11 days, and I am not sure what really happened. He was too weak to continue on, even with all of the extra attention we all were giving him. There were moments when I would think that he is going to pull through, but that is the way of life. You learn to move on.

We were able to research a little about what happened to Chance, and found that he probably had LAD. According to Get Leashed Magazine, it was a genetic problem that is found in purebred dogs. Some breeds like the English Bull Terrier may be facing their last days because of this disease. Some side effects of LAD include problems growing, deficiencies in their immune systems, and develop skin lesions on their paws. Ever wondered why bulldogs cost so much. They take a lot of care, and there is always that possibility of having problems. It is similar to the reason why Dalmatians are expensive.

However, the others, they are thriving. They are almost six weeks old. We have two boys and two girls. We will probably keep a boy and a girl. However, if I had a bigger home, I would keep them all. They are all so smart. We keep them inside, and they are using the puppy pads. Mistakes happen, but in general, these 5 week old pups know to go to the pad. That is impressive since most little breed dogs are hard to train, it is the opposite for my puppies.

We love our dogs and who knows, there may be more litters to come in the future. I hope you enjoyed this blog about my spoiled bulldogs. Maybe it will change the way you think about bulldogs. Remember, it is all about how you raise them. My babies are protective and that is how I want them. If you need a good protective dog who loves attention and love, I recommend looking into buying a real bulldog. You will be impressed!
