What is Ethics?

It seems like businesses are loosing sight of one important part of business; ethics. I am not even sure if some local businesses in Donalsonville even know what ethics are. In this blog, I am going to explain what ethics are.

According to SCU.edu, " Ethics is based on well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues."

I am sure many of you can come up with some businesses you have been to lately that don't practice ethics. For example, Three Notch Electric has no idea how to treat their customers. I often ask if they even care about their customers. If you are from around here I am sure you may feel the same way because the more I talk to others about the way their office workers treat their customers, it is all the same. They are unethical, plain and simple. If it does not benefit their monopoly, they don't care.

Three Notch is a monopoly because they are the only source of electricity for people in this area. So they have the advantage. They know that you have to have electricity, and the only place you can get electricity is from them. The water company for Lake Seminole, Decatur Consolidated Water Services is also a monopoly. These businesses enjoy having the power that they have over pricing. The pricing is not exactly cheap.

How can one electricity company be so different than the other? I hear all the time about people complaining about their outrageous electric bills from people in this area. Then the customers from Georgia Power claim that their prices are cheaper. It certainly seems that way.

I want to clarify that I have never had any bad experiences with the employees outside of the office. As a matter of fact, the employees outside of that office are awesome people. The people in the office are extremely stuck up! They are bad for business. Their horrible ethics that they practice in the office need to be reviewed online so that everyone knows that if you have ever had a bad experience with Three Notch Electric's office employees, then you are not alone.

It is hard to pin down exactly what ethics is because ethics is doing what is morally right. It makes you feel good to help others. When you practice ethics, you are trying to help others out the best way you can. However, being ethical is NOT following your feelings. In fact, when you follow your feelings, you may diverge from what is ethical. Religion, following the law and doing what society accepts has nothing at all to do with ethics. The reason is because they can veer you from what is actually ethical.

So what is ethics if it is not following the law, religion, society and your feelings?

First of all, ethics refers to the standards of right and wrong. It stipulates what humans SHOULD do, in terms of virtues, obligations, rights to society, impartiality and morality. For instance, when you go to the doctor, you expect to receive the assistance you need in order to get better. While some doctor offices are ethical, there are some that don't care about your well-being. They only care about getting paid. This is not ethics.

Secondly, ethics refers to the study and development of one's ethical standards. This means that you need to keep a check on your own ethics to make sure you are doing what is rational and legitimate. Ethics is the continuous effort of studying your own moral beliefs and conduct, and endeavoring to ensure that we and the businesses that we help shape, live up to standards that are rational and fortified.

Now, I think you should have a better understanding of what ethics are, and you also know that there are businesses whose employees never practice ethics. Three Notch is the reason that I decided to post this blog about ethics. I felt like they needed a review about their impartiality and lack of ethics in the office. Once again, this review is not on all employees at Three Notch, in specifically, the women in the office that don't care about helping others. Thank you for your time.
